FAQ

Why install charging stations at your employees’ homes?

Installing a charging station at an employee’s home allows you to: reduce logistical costs, save time on journeys, and simplify the management of business-related charging sessions

This is also ideal for mobile workers, such as sales representatives or technicians, as it allows them to charge their vehicles outside of working hours.

What home charging solutions are available for employees?

Companies have two main options:

1. The standard charging station: ideal for fully electric vehicles, high-mileage drivers (over 60mi/day), and employees living in detached houses.

2. The smart charging cable: ideal for plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), low-mileage drivers (under 60mi/day), employees living in shared or multi-unit housing where installation isn’t possible, and limited budgets.

The right choice depends on the employee’s needs, the allocated budget, and the desired level of supervision.

What are the main steps to install a charging station at an employee’s home?

The installation process follows four key steps:

1. Needs assessment (based on the vehicle type, charging habits, and housing situation)

2. Technical validation carried out by an installer certified by UK authorities (OZEV)

3. Installation performed at the employee’s home by an approved professional

4. Commissioning and supervision via a centralised management platform (for monitoring and reimbursement)

Professional support helps secure each stage of the process, benefiting both the company and the employee.

What charging power is recommended?

In the UK, a 7.4kW charging point provides enough power to fully charge a vehicle overnight.

Since 2022, all new charging points must comply with the Smart Charging Regulations, meaning they must be connected and programmable. Technical validation depends on the home’s power supply.

Can a charging point be installed if the employee is a tenant or lives in a flat?

In the UK, an employee who is renting or living in shared accommodation can install a charging point with the landlord’s written consent.

There is no automatic right to install a charging point, but many landlords accept, especially if the installation is discreet and carried out by an approved installer.

Who funds the installation of the home charging point?

The installation can be funded fully or partially by the company, depending on its internal policy.

Employees may also be eligible for government grants or incentives, subject to criteria such as vehicle type, housing situation, and compliant installation. To qualify for such support, the installation must be carried out by an installer approved by the UK authorities (OZEV).

What support is available for companies?

Public grants and incentives are available in the UK to encourage the installation of charging points, including a programme specifically aimed at businesses.

This programme can contribute towards installation costs on company premises or, in certain cases, towards employees’ home chargers. Eligibility depends on several factors, such as the company’s status, the type of installation, and whether the installer is approved.

How is the employee reimbursed for the electricity consumed?

Reimbursement can be made:

  • either based on the actual kilowatt-hours consumed, using a smart cable or charging point
  • or via a monthly flat rate, set according to the company’s internal policy

If the reimbursement covers exclusively business use and is supported by reliable data, it is generally not taxable under UK tax rules (HMRC).

How to manage your employees’ home charging

A supervision platform allows you to monitor your employees’ home charging sessions remotely.

Each session is logged with details such as date, duration, and consumption, and is linked to a specific user. This traceability helps ensure compliance with UK tax regulations in case of an audit (providing proof of business expenses).

Under which circumstances is home charging considered as a benefit in kind?

If the company pays for charging without distinguishing between personal and business use, this may be considered as a taxable benefit in kind by HMRC. However, if the electricity consumption is strictly for business purposes and accurately measured, the reimbursed costs are generally treated as non-taxable.

Are employees taxed on home charging sessions? In which cases do tax exemptions apply?

When the company reimburses only the electricity used for business purposes, and this consumption is accurately measured (via a connected charging point or monitoring system), these reimbursements are generally exempt from tax. According to HMRC, such payments are treated as legitimate business expenses, provided they are clearly justified.

However, if reliable data is not available or personal use is included, the reimbursed amounts may be considered as a taxable benefit in kind.

What happens to a charging point installed at an employee’s home when their employment contract ends?

When an employee leaves, the charging point can remain installed. Depending on the contract terms, it may be transferred to the employee or deactivated.

If the equipment is left for free, this could be considered a taxable benefit in kind, unless there is a valid business justification.

Can the charging point be used to charge a personal vehicle?

Yes, technically, an employee can use the charging point to charge their personal electric vehicle. However, it is up to the company to decide whether personal use is authorised. If allowed, charging sessions can be automatically differentiated through a connected monitoring system, ensuring that only business-related charging is reimbursed.
